You decide. The following is a quote from Pringle’s book, ‘Top 10 Qualities of a Great Leader Leader’. (By Dr. Phil Pringle.) This version was written in 2007.

We will be looking at more content of this book in nother articles in relation to C3 possibly being a ‘pseudo-Christian cult’.

On page 128 Pringle writes,

“The Arrogance of Diotrephes

I wrote to the church, but Diotrephes, who loves to have the preeminence among them, does not receive us. 10 Therefore, if I come, I will call to mind his deeds which he does, prating against us with malicious words. And not content with that, he himself does not receive the brethren, and forbids those who wish to, putting them out of the church.’ 3 John 1:9,10

His name literally means “raised and nourished by Jove,” which is another name for the chief Roman god, Jupiter, husband of Juno and god of light, the sky and weather, and god of the state and its welfare and its laws.

High achieving leaders inevitably have a healthy self-image, a robust ego. However, ego also needs a leash. The leader who breathes all the air in a room chokes everyone else out. This leader resents anyone else receiving any credit, attention, or privileges. Rather than releasing, he restricts everyone under his leadership. Let’s call this disorder the “Diotrephes complex.”

“I wrote to the church, BUT Diotrephes. . .” (v. 9), the apostle John explains. This leader is disagreeable. He’s contentious. He’s a “but” in the relationship. He’s an opposer. John oversees this church. He is desperate to communicate with the people but the local leader is blocking him. Never underestimate the power of leadership. It carries the power to release or restrict an entire church into or out of blessing.

“. . . Diotrephes,. . . loves. . . preeminance. . .“ (v. 9). Diotrephes preens himself with the attention of the followers. The seeds of false pseudo-Christian cults are seen when leaders place themselves rather than Christ at the center of a group. They make disciples of themselves, not Christ.” – Phil Pringle, Top 10 Qualities of a Great Leader Leader, 2007, pg. 128.
