The credentials of “Dr” Phil

Before reading the below article, please read the folllowing article.

Is Doctor Phil Pringle Really a Doctor?

To this date we are not familiar with Phil Pringle gaining any further theological qualifications.

Pringle says “people will heap up teaching because [their] ears [are] itching to hear the Word”?

There are some things that Phil Pringle does that are either flat out stupid or deliberately deceitful.

Here is a good example of Phil Pringle encouraging the church to use Satan’s church growth strategies.

Enough Said – Pringle Reveals All…

Pringle has done some something similar again just recently. You know someone is a false teacher when they twist God’s Word on false teachers.

To prepare you for this piece, we will put up a few different translations just in case C3s critics think it is us condemning Phil Pringle.
God says in His Word:

For the time will come when people will not put up with sound doctrine. Instead, to suit their own desires, they will gather around them a great number of teachers to say what their itching ears want to hear. New International Version

For a time is coming when people will no longer listen to sound and wholesome teaching. They will follow their own desires and will look for teachers who will tell them whatever their itching ears want to hear. New Living Translation

For the time is coming when people will not endure sound teaching, but having itching ears they will accumulate for themselves teachers to suit their own passions, English Standard Version

For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but wanting to have their ears tickled, they will accumulate for themselves teachers in accordance to their own desires, New American Standard Bible

For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but after their own lusts shall they heap to themselves teachers, having itching ears; King James Bible

Now that you’ve read the scripture, ask yourself these questions:

  1. How do you think Phil Pringle will twist this scripture?
  2. Do you think Paul the Apostle wants us to be not only hearers of false teachers but doers of their false teaching?

Well here is Phil Pringle teaching how a person in Christ is a prepared person. Isn’t Phil Pringle fulfilling the above scripture accurately? There is only one scripture used which he twists and then proceeds to teach those with itching ears everything of the world but not “sound doctrine”.

PREPARATION

Paul says in the last days people will heap up teaching because they ears itching to hear the Word (2 Tim 4:3). However it is doing the Word that builds our lives, not just hearing it.

The person in Christ is a prepared person. They get ready. They’re set for everything. Nothing will move them because they’re settled firmly upon Jesus Christ, the rock. They’re doers of the Word, not just hearers only.

In Rich Dad’s Guide to Investing, Robert T Kiyosaki, says, ‘You are either prepared or you’re not. You’re either in position or you’re not. If you’re prepared, there is a deal of a lifetime being presented to you every day of your life.’

Benjamin Disraeli, the British Prime Minister in the late eighteen-hundreds declared ‘The secret of success in life is for a man to be ready for his opportunity when it comes.’

Louis Pasteur also of the late eighteen-hundreds , the famous French chemist and biologist and inventor of pasteurization and various vaccines, also understood the power of preparation – ‘Chance favours the prepared mind.’

As pointed out in my previous post (here), City Harvest Church’s (CHC) Rev “Dr” Kong Hee and Rev “Dr” Phil Pringle obtained their master’s and doctorates from the grandly named New Covenant International University and Theological Seminary (NCIU), a diploma mill (awarding bogus degrees for money) in Lake Worth, Florida.

NCIU was founded in Auckland, New Zealand in 1978 by a New Zealander “Dr” Kevin Dyson, who has only very recently (September 2010) been appointed to the Advisory Committee of CHC, along with Phil Pringle, to improve CHC’s  structure, governance and accountability  (source).

Kevin Dyson is also on the Board of CMN Ministry, which is affiliated with Phil Pringle’s C3 Church (source)

Kong Hee serves on NCIU’s International Board of Reference, and is a non-resident faculty member of NCIU. (see screenshot below)

It therefore appears that Kong Hee, Phil Pringle and the founder of the diploma mill, Kevin Dyson, are on very close terms indeed.

“Dr” Kevin Dyson is also an Adjunct Lecturer at  Tung Ling Seminary, Malaysia (affiliated with Tung Ling Bible School, Singapore).

There are various outfits (mostly suspect) called Jubilee International Bible Institute and Evangelical Theological Seminary online, but there is no Jubilee International Bible Institute in California (CA) and no Evangelical Theological Seminary in Missouri (MO).

A higher education institution that has no online presence whatsoever is automatically suspect, if not outright fictitious. It is most probably a diploma mill.

I have also found the following information (here, full text reproduced below):

Evangelical Theological Seminary has since changed its name to Biblical Life College and Seminary, operates out of Dixon, MO, claims accreditation by American Accrediting Association of Theological Institutions (not recognized by the U.S. Department of Education ), and (under the name of Evangelical Theological Seminary) is also listed as a degree mill in Chapter 12 of Name It and Frame It? New Opportunities in Adult Education and How to Avoid Being Ripped Off by ‘Christian’ Degree Mills (affectionately known as NIFI) by Steve Levicoff, Ph.D.

Kevin Dyson’s “alma maters”, Jubilee International Bible Institute, CA, USA, and  Evangelical Theological Seminary, MO, USA have no online presence whatsoever. Furthermore, Evangelical Theological Seminary, MO, USA is listed as a diploma mill by Levicoff. I therefore conclude that both outfits are bogus.
It would appear that Kevin Dyson has practiced fraud and deception, by using bogus academic credentials, on Tung Ling Seminary, Malaysia, where he is an adjunct lecturer (unless Tung Ling colluded with Dyson in perpetrating the deception on the public). Interestingly, Rev “Dr” Eu Hong Seng, Chairman and faculty member of Tung Ling Seminary, is also on Dyson’s diploma mill NCIU’s International Board of Reference (along with Kong Hee). So perhaps Tung Ling is indeed in collusion with Dyson in the deception.

Dyson’s dishonesty further strengthens my belief that NCIU which Dyson founded is a fraud and a diploma mill, from which Kong Hee and Phil Pringle, close friends of Dyson’s, obtained bogus doctorates.

Kevin Dyson holds a BA (BTh) from Jubilee International Bible College (JIBC), Queensland, Australia.

I could find no website of the said college, but instead found the following advertisement for its Diploma courses (no Bachelor’s program mentioned) on the New Straits Times (Malaysia) of Oct 1, 1994 (source):

The above advertisement links JIBC with “Dr” Tony Keys in 1994. The following LinkedIn profile however associates him with Jubilee International Christian College of Brisbane in 1994. An outfit whose President (and founder, apparently [here]) is confused about its name is very worrying indeed.

Neal Patterson, Tung Ling Bible School, and Quality of JIBC 

The former principal (c. 1990-94) of Tung Ling Bible School in Singapore, “Dr” Neal Patterson, holds a Doctorate in Theology from Jubilee International Bible College (JIBC) in Brisbane, Australia (source).

According to Tony Keys, the founder and President (Feb 1983 – Dec 1999) of JIBC, the college has only nine staff members (academic and admin) in Dec 1999 (see Keys’ LinkedIn profile above). For such a modest outfit to award a Doctorate in Theology is another astounding feat.

This is yet another sign of the quality of degrees/diplomas awarded by JIBC.

 VISION INTERNATIONAL UNIVERSITY (SOURCE)

I first ran across Vision International University a few years ago while researching a few issues concerning Newport University, as they were the only other institution besides Newport “accredited” by the IASCU. At the time, their Web site at http://viu.com had a minimal amount of information, and the only other Web site with any information was http://www.angelfire.com/rock/lathropcc/new_page_1.htm . Their accreditation statement (including a statement that they were affiliated with Newport University) was located at http://www.angelfire.com/rock/lathropcc/new_page_2.htm . These Web pages are still functional, probably due to the fact that a free Web host hosts them.

It is interesting to note that IASCU, for the longest time was supposedly operating out of Antwerp, Belgium, but now claims to be located in Berlin, Germany. Moreover, a search for member institutions on their Web site (neatly organized by continents) doesn’t reveal any affiliated schools. My guess is that there still aren’t any other members, aside from Newport and Vision. The bottom line, however, is this: claiming accreditation by IASCU serves one, and only one, purpose—to deceive prospective students as to the accreditation and legitimacy of the school and the utility of the degrees. (For the record, Vision International University’s predecessors, such as Vision Christian College and Vision Bible College and Seminary, also claimed unrecognized accreditation—from the infamous Accrediting Commission International.)

In addition to bogus accreditation, Vision International University also claims affiliation with The American Society of Christian Therapists and The American Association of Family Counselors. Both organizations are listed as credential mills in Chapter 13 of Name It and Frame It? New Opportunities in Adult Education and How to Avoid Being Ripped Off by ‘Christian’ Degree Mills  (affectionately known as NIFI) by Steve Levicoff, Ph.D.. Moreover Vision International University predecessors Vision Christian College, Vision Christian University and Logos Bible College and Graduate School (founded by Vision International University president Stan E. DeKoven) are all specifically listed as degree mills in Chapter 12 of NIFI. (Although, of course, nothing beats hearing it straight from the author—thanks, Steve.)

Vision International University now claims to be “one of the world’s largest distance-education institutions with over 4,000 campus locations on six continents and in 112 nations.” What they neglect to say, of course, is that practically anyone can set up a “campus” and affiliate himself or herself with Vision. Conveniently, those who set up campuses, frequently end up being recipients of Vision degrees. The self-proclaimed mastermind of this Rube Goldberg-inspired educational franchise system is Dr. Stan E. DeKoven, president of Vision International University.

In addition to a claiming a Bachelors degree in Psychology from San Diego State University and a M.A. in Counseling from Webster University, Stan E. DeKoven, also claims a D.Min. from the Evangelical Theological Seminary.

Could this be the same Evangelical Theological Seminary that has since changed its name to Biblical Life College and Seminary, operates out of Dixon, MO, claims accreditation by American Accrediting Association of Theological Institutions (not recognized by the U.S. Department of Education), and (under the name of Evangelical Theological Seminary) is also listed as a degree mill in Chapter 12 of NIFI? Moreover, Dr. DeKoven also claims a Ph.D. from the now defunct (and never accredited) Professional School of Psychological Studies, and is allegedly completing his second Ph.D. in Leadership from Berne University.

Dr. DeKoven is also listed (sans any titles or academic credentials, except for being the president of Vision Christian College and Vision Christian Ministries) as ”Professor of several courses in the counseling field” on Christian Leadership University’s Faculty Members Web site. Not surprisingly, at one time, Christian Leadership University claimed accreditation from ACI (it now claims it from the World-Wide Accreditation Commission of Christian Educational Institutions) through its affiliation with Vision Bible College and Seminary, and is also listed as a degree mill in NIFI. Currently their Web site makes no mention of any affiliation with Vision.

“How can you explain to people who have never experienced a true revival what it is like to have an open heaven – a situation in which prayers are answered almost as fast as they are spoken?” asks Dr. Kevin Dyson, Deacon at New Covenant International (NCI), a theological seminary in the USA. “One way would be to take them to Fiji,” he answers. “Fiji is one of the nations which God is currently blessing in an unusual manner.””13 years ago, NCI began working with Christian Mission Fellowship, a national church movement led by pastor Suliasi Kurolo,” writes Dyson. “Since then, 1,200 students have completed theological studies. 87 new churches have been planted, three new Bible schools founded, and missions projects in 16 Pacific nations started. At the most recent graduation, 18 new pastors were ordained, which is not possible until they each have a church with at least 50 adult members. In addition, we blessed 83 new church planters, who aim to plant 62 new churches in the next 12 months.”

“Listening to these church planters is like reading a new edition of Acts. We heard of people being raised from the dead, invalids who can walk again, blind who can now see, deaf who can hear and dumb who can now speak, as well as many new believers in the Kingdom of God,” he reports. “One Hindu woman, for example, was in Fiji’s main hospital, suffering from terminal cancer. Her family was gathered around her as a Bible school student came by, visiting the patients. He was not only able to explain the gospel to the whole family, but also prayed for the woman’s healing. The woman was healed, along with others who were healed of deafness and dumbness. In response, 22 Hindus decided to become Christians. The government has asked NCI to develop a programme for the High Schools based on Biblical values, as politicians saw God’s power transforming young people and old. It is clearly a true, observable and lasting revival,” says Dyson.

You can see that this is the correct institute from google maps because they have photos of the construction site of their new buildings on both google maps and their website. But after browsing endlessly on their church and the TCA website, there is no mention of New Covenant University, New Covenant International University or Kevin Dyson.

Name It and Frame It? is a 1993 book by Steve Levicoff about Christian schools. He explores the accreditation process, good and bad institutions of higher learning. This work has four different editions, which contain updated information and responses from various groups. In the preface of the third edition Levicoff wrote about the book, “administrators at legitimately accredited Christian schools loved it, but the operators of degree mills weren’t too pleased.”

There are some very impressive ministry college names in the list in his book. The one that caught my eye was, ‘New Covenant International Theological Seminary‘, which is supposedly located in Honolulu, Hawaii. Thank you Steve Levicoff!

It’s the same place. No university. The university’s information is wrong when it says, “In 1990 NCIU was incorporated in the United States as an independent, self-governing corporation where it remains to this day”.

How can I tell if a school is a diploma mill?

  • They often have names similar to well-known colleges or universities, but fail to mention an accrediting agency or name a fake accrediting agency.
  • The organization frequently changes addresses, sometimes moving from state to state.
  • Written materials typically include numerous spelling and grammatical errors, sometimes on the diploma itself.
  • Overemphasis on the speed and brevity with which someone can receive a degree (e.g. “Call now and have your degree shipped to you overnight!”).
  • Degrees can be earned in far less time than normal (e.g. 27 days) or the diploma is printed with a specific backdate.
  • There is no selectivity in admissions, or any questions about previous test scores or detailed academic history.
  • No interaction with professors or faculty (e.g. only two emails are received from a professor).
  • Degree requirements are vague or unspecified, lacking class descriptions and without any mention of how many credit hours are required to complete a program.
  • Tuition and fees are typically on a per-degree basis.
  • Grade point average (GPA) and academic honors (e.g. Summa Cum Laude) can be specified at the time of purchase.

There are a number of well researched sources that document that New Covenant International University is yet another diploma mill.

“This is a legal religious educational institution in the state of Florida in the USA. The Florida Statutes 1005.6 (f) states that, “A religious college may operate without governmental oversight”.

That means you can start up an university to teach black magic in Florida as long as the rules in Statutes 1005.6 is followed. You can give out Ph.D in Voodoo or Ph.D in Bomoh, if you like. Though being legally instituted by the state of Florida, that alone does not guarantee the recognition of the institution’s degrees in other states of the USA and other countries. Such recognition comes through ‘accreditation’. That means the master’s degrees and doctorates provided by institutions which are accredited and those which are not are qualitatively different.

The accreditation body that guarantees the quality of higher education in Florida is the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools. Theological seminaries and Christian universities like Asbury Theological Seminary and Baylor University are accredited by the body. And New Covenant International University & Theological Seminary is not in the accreditation list.

Simply said, those without accreditation is free to grant degrees without ensuring academic competency and so the certificates are not recognized. The implication is that those people who got their degrees and doctorates from unaccredited institutions cannot use the title “Dr.” in their referent, or even if they use it, it is a fake “Dr.”, like calling a woman without a child under her care as “mother”.

Now you may be wondering why am I highlighting the New Covenant International University & Theological Seminary. That is because the institution’s president Kevin Dyson was here earlier this year giving a series of talks on relationship at City Harvest Church. And lo and behold, our local charismatic Kong Hee’s Master of Divinity (M.Div) and Doctor of Theology (D.Th) are from Dyson’s institution. If he really wants a good quality theological education degree, he can get them from local seminaries and theological colleges. There are plenty which are accredited here. Don’t have to get from a dubious institution in Florida. But if he prefer overseas degrees, he should opt for places like Asbury or Baylor”. In summary:

1: Be wary of any Doctorate earned in the US – especially Florida. 2: Do your own research
3: Ask for a copy of Dr Phil’s transcript and ask any University in Australia whether they would recognize it
3: Be extremely wary of anything a megachurch Pastor tells you!

  • So Phil Pringle for the last few years has been asking his staff and students to call him Dr Phil.
  • Pringle has used his ‘Doctorate’ to promote and advertise his ministry and ministry colleges.
  • Phil Pringle is on a board of members where he seems to know the president of the NCI University & Theological Seminary, Kevin Dyson.
  • Kevin Dyson DID have an educational institution in Florida, which later moved off the property.
  • Kevin Dyson also gave Kong Hee a Master’s and Doctorate in theology.

Maybe it is worth to take Steve Levicoff’s advice from his book, ‘Name It and Frame It’. If the book was released in 1993, it already exposes the sad credentials of Kong Hee. With Pringle it is more questionable. There is no sign whatsoever that the Seminary is now endorsed as an accredited educational facility. Since Pringle gained his doctorate in 1999, the chances are incredibly high that it is not legitimate.

What adds further weight to it’s illegitimacy is the fact that Pringle only promoted his credentials only a few times. The second time I found he used his doctorate credentials, he was too vague to explain where he got them, what he got them for and who gave them to him. Even if he knows his doctorate is meaningless, why would he not promote people to call him ‘Doctor’ anyway?
